Project 31: Day 8 Beauty Tips

Well, I don't know if I would call them "tips" really - but here are my go-to things that I always do for my beauty regime!!
First - for my hair, it has to be tamed! I have wild, curly hair & if I just let it go all natural it's all over the place!! So, if I just let it dry naturally I've found this is a good product to just fluff & go!!
Though - ideally if I have time I like to partially blow dry my hair, use this...
then put my hair up in huge Velcro rollers & let it finish drying...then when I take it down flatness it never an issue and it was still a pretty easy process - just takes a little longer b/c I have to let it finish drying!! I've just recently discovered these products to be honest, but they'll be under my sink from now on!!!

Also - my quickest beauty tip consists of two things:

Nothing removes make up better!!!

If we're on the way home late at night I actually will grab a wipey out of my diaper bag & start wiping off the makeup in the car - then my face cleaning is at least done by the time we get home, except for maybe adding a little moisturizer! And Vaseline is the best thing I've found for removing ALL makeup and it really makes my skin super soft, too - so no need for moisturizer!! And they are both cheap, too! Which helps to offset the cost of the new Redkin products I've started using!! LOL!

Ear Infections...Again...or Still...

Well, my little man has ear infections again...or still. I don't know if they've ever gone away. We went in for his 9 month check up (2 months ago) and discovered that he had two ear infections and bronchitis at that time.

Antibiotics & breathing treatments.(round 1)

Follow up 2 weeks later - still had both.

More Antibiotics, more breathing treatments.(round 2)

Follow up 2 weeks later - still had ear infections, but bronchitis was gone.

More Antibiotics plus a shot of antibiotics & a flu shot since the bronchitis was better. (round 3)

Scheduled a follow up for 30 days later so we could get his 2nd flu shot (that would have been a week from Monday)

So, yesterday Aaron woke up with a runny eye. He didn't have any fever and he acted fine, though. That evening his eye was still runny and he had a low grade fever of 99 degrees. I gave him some acetaminophen & he went to bed & actually had a very good night, so I had high hopes for this morning. Well, his eye looked better this morning, but he felt very warm to me still - so I took his temperature again this morning and it was 102.1. Sheesh!!! I can't believe he didn't wake up crying or anything during the night. I don't have any idea what time it spiked.

So, I gave him more acetaminophen, we dropped Emma off at school (day care) and headed to the sitter's house - who is basically like family. I went on into work and told her I was going to call the doctor to get an appointment and would call when I found out a time - I hoped he would just rest & that's just what he did. He went back to bed after I left, took a long nap & when I went to pick him for his appointment (which was at 11:00) he was up and happy as ever. She said he had woke up in the BEST mood!! He didn't feel warm to me at all...and sure enough it was 98.4 degrees when we saw the doctor. His lungs were clear and sounded good, but sure enough he still had ear infections.

Now we've used three non-penicillin antibiotics b/c both Emma, her daddy & I have had reactions to it...Emma's was the most severe. Aaron's doctor even had me take him to get tested for the allergy, but you can't test for an allergy unless you've been exposed. I had to spend two hours and a copay at the allergist to find that out, btw!!

So, the plan is to go forward with the penicillin & watch him (round 4)!! Chances are even if he is allergic he wouldn't have a reaction the first time he's exposed to the medicine. And I have an RN living on one side of me and a Fireman EMT on the other side - and we're ten minutes away from St. Luke's ER, which my doctor told me today has the best peds group, so go there if there is ANY swelling.

His doctor really thinks it's going to work, though b/c it's much stronger than anything he's had. I truly hope it does b/c if it doesn't the only real thing that will be left to do is tubes. Now I know kids get tubes every day...but I only want to put my child under anesthesia as a last resort. If it comes to that, I will do what the doctor thinks is best for him with no hesitation. We're going on 2 months of ear infections, though - in both ears - and 4 antibiotics now. I seriously don't think we'll be trying any more medicines if the penicillin fails to help him.

And he was SOOOO good at the doctor's office today. He didn't cry out once. He let the doctor poke around in his ears withing even a flinch - something his sister isn't known for - he was smiling and happy and laughing the whole time. You'd never know there was anything wrong with him.
Well, I'm off to get him now & then run through the pharmacy drive-thru to pick up this penicillin - please say a little prayer it works and we're done with it! Two weeks after this last follow up is his ONE YEAR CHECKUP!! Can you believe it??? I want him well and happy (well, he's still happy) for his b'day, too.

Project 31: I'm falling way behind...

Looks like I'll be playing catch up for my Project 31 Posts!!!
Day 5: Write a blog thanking someone who has made your heart come alive...
I don't think I say thank you to my husband nearly enough for everything that he does for me and for our children! Michael can be a hard man to love sometimes, but I always do and always will love him - he is the constant rock that I can depend on to be there to help me when I need him. I don't know what I would do without him.
And how can your heart not skip a beat over a man that will have a tea party with his little girl??
and play with Barbies...
and of course there's no doubt he'll be out playing football with this guy
It's what a great father he is that makes my heart come alive more than anything!

Thanks babe!!!

Day 6: Jaded Beauty. Has the world's definition of beauty ever jaded you?
Ya know I've always followed my own path I think - I've never let the ideals of others have much influence on me one way or another. I've always battled my weight, but not so much b/c I was worried as to how others saw me, but b/c I wanted to make myself happy when I looked in the mirror., I don't let what others think really bother me, especially when it comes to my own well being!

Day 7: Wrote a blog to encourage another beautiful woman!
I am not a great inspirational speaker or a wonderful motivator...but I can recognize one when I see or hear them and years ago my friend took me to see Maya Angelou for my b'day! I've always loved her, but until I saw her live I really couldn't appreciate what a beautiful woman she was. And I cannot put into words what beautiful women we are each in our own ways better than she can...

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Project 31: Day 4

I don't think I have a favorite outfit...and much less do not like pictures of myself, so today was a hard post for me. Dressing up for work everyday I don't get to wear my favorite clothes - which would be jeans and v-neck sweater or shirt of some kind usually - so on a daily basis I'm in heels and slacks usually. Today, though I am wearing one of my favorite tops and recently it's been a favorite color, too - my long sleeved, v-neck, ribbed sweater - usually red is my favorite color to wear, but I really like this sweater for some reason.
It's a comfy sweater and I love long sleeved shirts...and it's super warm, which is great for days like today when it's so cold and I left my coat at home! Smart, I know! I'm not a super fashionista - I wear what I like, whether it's the latest trend or not! I just like to feel comfortable and wear what I feel looks good on me.

Project 31: Days 2 & 3

I think the combination of every single thing about me is what makes me uniquely me. I mean - there are a lot of things about me that individually are exactly like someone else - other people are 1/2 Egyptian, have their MBA, are married with two kids, love photography, are brunettes...etc. I bet I could find a LOT people who match some or all of my 100 Things About Me...but I would be willing to be that no where out there in the world is there someone who matches all 100!! I've traveled the world - I've been exposed to a lot of different cultures, I've studied and learned, I have a career, a family, husband & two kids, I have tattoos, I studied art, I love sushi...individually none of these things make me unique - but put them all together and you get Hanna, Uniquely Hanna!!!

My Grannie - I don't know anyone who is closer to God than she. I once heard my Aunt say that Grannie had a direct link to Him!!! With everything she does she puts God first and with every decision she makes God is a factor. She inspires me in many ways and her pure heart inspires beauty! She is going to be 97 this year...and I thank God daily that I have her in my life. Everyone who knows my Grannie loves her and it makes me proud to tell people that I am her grand-daughter!!

I'm starting a new scarf this week!

I can't wait to see all these colors come together! I think it's gonna look good! Then some solid fringe - but I haven't decided what color that will be.

Project 31: Day 1 What Does Beauty Mean To You?

So, this doesn't sound like a hard question...what does beauty mean to me...and if I sit and think about it too long I'd probably never be able to answer it. I started to do that, too - think too deeply on it to the point that I though - oh, this challenge is going to be to hard to put into words. I even googled quotes about beauty for inspiration.

Then I sat back and looked at my desktop and around my office and beauty was staring me in the face. I have pictures of Emma & Aaron - my loves, my heart, my beauties - all around me and thought why did I even have to think about it. My children are the best that has ever come from me - the most beautiful thing I've ever done or made - they are perfect - flawless - innocent. Each person has their own beauties in their lives - mine are the two tiny people that my husband and I made together out of our love for one another. They are the most perfect gift that God chose to allow us. I thank Him daily for these two blessings that I have in my life that I truly do not deserve. The pure, unconditional love that I have for these two people is BEAUTY...and it still doesn't compare to the love He has for us...I think that's what beauty is - the true, most pure love that a parent has for their child. It cannot be explained - you have to experience it for yourself to understand. My mother used to always tell me, "When you have kids you'll understand why I do the things I do..." and she was right (like she usually is).

Project 31

Yummy Stroganoff Recipe

So last night I made Stroganoff - it's one of my favorite dishes! When I have time & plan ahead I used to cook beef tips all day in the slow cooker so it would be super tender and ready to go into my stroganoff. Since I don't have tons of time these days and don't plan ahead like I should, I often make it now with ground meat. And since I married a hunter - ground venison actually! It tastes the same to me and is totally lean - no fat whatsoever!!

So other than the venison (& mushrooms - forgot to get their picture) here are some of my key ingredients!

Wocestershire Sauce. Say that three times fast!
Egg Noodles - now I know this is rigatoni, but  that's b/c when I started cooking last night & went into the pantry for my egg noodles (which I almost always have on hand) there were none to be found. The rigatoni was a good substitute, but Egg Noodles are my preference!
Black Pepper - lots and lots of black pepper!
Cream of Mushroom & Sour Cream - I'm doing Weight Watchers, so the 98% Fat Free Soup and Fat Free Sour Cream help cut way back on the points for this meal!
And yes - I don't mind buying generic on some items...some you have to buy certain brands, though - but that's a whole other post!!

So, to start off cook your ground meat (I cooked up 1lb) & mushrooms (about 1 1/2 cups sliced) till it's totally done & your mushrooms are nice and tender. You can throw in onions, too - sometimes I do - sometimes I don't! I also put the Worcestershire sauce in while my mushrooms are cooking so they soak up that yummy taste!
When that's all done put in your soup...
then your sour cream and give it all a good mix...then add the black pepper. Both the sour cream & the black pepper is really to taste, but I like LOTS of black pepper. Lots & Lots! And I like enough sour cream to make the mixture really creamy - last night I used about 12oz of sour cream. You can use as much as you want and you can even add a splash of milk if you want it even more creamy.
When that is all mixed well and looks nice & creamy I put in my noodles, which I've cooked al dente. I do this b/c I want them to finish cooking in the sauce so they'll also soak up all that yummy flavor goodness.
Mix it all up really well - turn the heat down low and cook till your noodles are tender.
Then serve it up in a big bowl - with a big spoon - b/c it's a hearty meal!
You can tell my family loves it - we didn't even have leftovers!
Aaron even really enjoyed it last night!
With a little sweet peas on the side it was a great meal for dinner last night!

Had to share this clip of Aaron walking...

He had just finished his bath, hence the diaper only attire!! He's getting the hang of it and going a little further each time - and would do a lot better if big sister didn't try to "help" so much!!!

I ran out of yarn!!

So, you know I had started working on a scarf a few days ago...
Well - I rant out of yarn last night while working on it...I called my mother to ask the best option for tying off so that I could start again when I bought more and she suggested to just sew the sides up if it was long enough and make a collar instead.

I've told you before that my mother is brilliant, right!?!?

So, last night instead of quitting when I ran out of yarn, I just turned the sides together, sewed them up & ended up with this ever so cozy collar instead!

Again - embellishments would make it way cuter, too but I still like it!

I also made a super yummy strogranoff last night, too! So stay tuned - my recipe will follow shortly!

Don't real women walk around in curlers drinking wine!?!?

Or...time to embarrass myself!

So...when I wash my hair at night I either just let it dry down naturally - it I want a little bit of a wild look in the AM, or I'll put it up in Velcro rollers and even sleep in them if it isn't dry by the time I crawl into bed (not the most comfy sleep on those nights).

Last night was a roller night.

Last night was also a "have a glass of wine night"!!

Ain't I cute??
I was tired and wanted to sit, relax and catch up on my DVR after the kids went to bed - particularly Private Practice b/c I missed it last week. Only thing is, when I clicked on PP on my DVR, it wasn't PP that played - it was some other show that I had never seen. My DVR played a dirty trick on me last night it would appear AND to make matters worse the latest episode isn't even online to watch AND to make it even more worse Aaron did NOT want to go to sleep last night so I kept having to go in and get him, rock him, change him, feed him, soothe him, play with him... until 3 hours later he finally decided he'd go to bed & stay there.

So, it seems I wouldn't have been able to watch PP anyway, but I would like to at some point...I guess eventually it'll be online, but if it's after Thursday that means I can't watch tomorrow night's episode either.

Why I Love My Speedlite

Every Sunday morning my kids are subject to me and my camera! I've never taken them to have a professional picture taken, so I take advantage of Sunday mornings when they are already dressed up anyway for church. I try to get ready so that we have about ten minutes or so to take a few quick pictures of them all dressed up. We don't have time to go outside for these or to the park so we have to take then in the house where I don't have a lot of natural light to work with at that time of day. get around that I use my Speedlite and I love it! Anytime we do anything indoors I pull out my speedlite and I have always been so happy with the final outcome of my pictures. It's an excellent flash for non-professional photographers IMHO!!

I took these pictures yesterday morning before church. Most of them are straight out of the camera. I think I adjusted the temperature on a couple of them, but that's it and they all turned out great!
I love this candid shot of her laughing!
And her beautiful smile, too of course!
She had brought her babies out of her room this morning and made a pallet for them in the living room!
My gadget girl - she plays with my old iPhone and loves to take pictures with it! What can I say? She is her mother's daughter!!
This is a common background for these Sunday pictures...
She loves to hug on him...sometimes I have to remind her not so tightly, though!! :)
Like I said - a gadget girl!! LOL!

I finished my first hat...with minimal errors!!

WooHoo - I finished my first hat this weekend! I have to admit it didn't come out PERFECT, but can you tell!??! I still think it looks pretty good & it's definitely warm!
Mom also told me a variation to my stitch if I didn't want the rows...I'm doing that stitch now with a scarf I started when I finished the hat. I think I like the look of this stitch better than the ribbed look - all depends on the pattern really. And I'm doing a double crochet stitch, too so it's a much tighter pattern - be good and warm wrapped around my neck!
Our neighbor came over to visit last night & brought Aaron a 3 pack of Baby Legs - I love these things! And love that when they outgrow them they can wear them as sleeves, too!! Anyway - I'm in search of a pattern for these now - I think they would be very fun to make and be a good beginner pattern for me, too!

Proof that kids watch EVERYTHING you do...

So, my little girl is growing up and doesn't need mommy's help as much anymore on big girl tasks (tear), but it's also good that she is learning to do things on her own - I know this in my head, please someone explain it to my heart!!

Well, one of those things is getting dressed. She's actually been getting dressed on her own for quite a while - including picking out her wardrobe! Now, when I would help her get dressed I would put her shirt over her head and then she would slip her arms in and through the arm holes. Normal order for dressing a toddler! Well, the other day she was in my room while I was getting dressed and she commented on the fact that I put my arms in first, then slipped my shirt over my head and put my head through the hole the time I really didn't think anything of it, except, "Hmmm...she is right. I hadn't noticed that I did it differently when I dressed her."

Well, this morning I was doing my hair and Emma was in her room getting dressed (in an outfit she picked out this morning as opposed to the one we picked out the night before to save time I might add) and she came into my room - she was fully dressed except she only had her arms in her shirt and was holding it in front of her...then she told me, "Look mommy!" She pulled the shirt over her head, pulled it down then put out her arms like "TA DA" and she said, "See, I did it like you Mommy!!!" and turned & walked back to her room to finish dressing.

I was dumbfounded!! Because she watched that I put my shirts on me differently than how I put them on her she made a point to show me that she could do it that way, too. Kids do watch and really see EVERYTHING that you do!

This seems like eons ago now...

Beauty Tips from Emma

I came into Emma's bathroom yesterday to find her in front of her mirror with brush in hand. Emma is not the most tender-headed person, so you can imagine that when it's time to brush all that hair I try my best to be gentle, but when there are tangles it isn't the most fun task!!

So yesterday she told me, "This is how you do it. Gently!!"
She then proceeded to attempt to make a ponytail - this wasn't too successful, though. I guess I need to teach her how to put on a ponytail holder!

Except for braids, though she really doesn't like to have her hair up at all. Most days she tells me, "Mommy, I just want to wear it down like this," and then she swings her head around to make her hair swing!! LOL! On those days she wears a headband, b/c that's something she can put in her hair on her own. Usually, though I just pull up the front at least into a little ponytail with a clip to keep it out of her eyes!

Finding her like this in her bathroom made me realize how much she is growing up - it won't be long until she won't need me to do her hair at all. I think that is going to make me cry!
