Let there be lights!

Man - I am so thankful our power came back on last night! We really got very lucky. We were here Saturday morning when the storm hit and power went out and we were here throughout the day w/out power, but Saturday evening Michael's brother & his wife had power restored and they invited us over to come stay with them whie our power was out. I was very thankful to them for taking us in for a couple of nights. Their area and Michael's parent's area both had power very early on. I told Michael I could handle being home w/out power after those couple of days b/c the cool front had things cooled off and it wasn't so muggy anymore, but Saturday & Sunday night it was too hot and muggy.

So...thanks so much Jamie & Steven for inviting us to evacuate to your house for a couple days!! Emma had fun playing with her cousin and sleeping in the A/C!!!

We came home Monday morning and were outside most of the day. Michael and our neighbor worked on our fences, their fences, and the neighbors' fences and yards getting things back to normal and cleaned up. The road behind our neighborhood had a lot of damage and a lot of trees down and several power line poles down across the road, too. I think the fact that those poles were down over the road made our area a priority to the electric company. We heard they were back there working and that our power maybe would be restored by 6:00 that evening - we didn't get our hopes up. So, we stayed outside playing with the neighbors and enjoying the cool temperatures!! Around 6:00 when we thought power was going to come back on we were all outside playing still (we played tennis & volleyball in the street) when we saw Centerpoint Energy trucks drive by - about an hour later we saw the lights come on and we all started jumping up and down celebrating!! You could hear people all over the place yelling in excitement! Then we heard a little boy holler, "Turn on the TV!!!" Ha ha!

I called my parents immediately b/c they were still stuck without power and told them to come over. I told daddy I could make him coffee in the morning and he said, "You can make me coffee tonight!!! We'll be there in 45 minutes!!" LOL!!! Ironically power came back on just about the time the Dallas/Philadelphia game came on!! I think they knew Michael and Carlton would be grouchy w/out their football!! Ha ha!

I am ready for life to get back to normal, but I know it's going to be a long time for normal to come back to so many people that lost so much during the storm. I am so very thankful that we had such minimal damage in our area. There were several homes in our neighborhood that lost much of their roofs and suffered so much damage, but our street really had minimal damage compared to those around us.

Our work is still closed, but at least now that we have power I can work from home b/c our computing systems are apparently up and running. I would rather work from home the rest of this week while things are still a little hectic instead of getting out on the roads. I was worried about things getting backed up, but with power at home I can keep up with my work and it won't be piled up and rushed when we go back to the office.

Sky still looks scary

After the storm

Report from my neighborhood and what I've heard from family: Hurricane
Ike left us a lot of water and mess, but not too much damage and so
far no one has been injured that I know. I'm so thankful we are all
safe. The mess won't be hard to clean. A few fences need repair and
some trees are down. I think a couple neighbors did have some leaks
though. Hopefully not too bad though. And it isn't too hot now without
AC. Tomorrow I think it will be though.

This is a birthday I don't think I'll ever forget!

We're takin' a pounding

I don't think it has let up in over four hours. We are in the closet
under the stairs mostly and I have to say I'm pretty scared and ready
for some daylight and this to be over.

Bring it on Ike

Well, we're battening down the hatches and staying put for Ike. We didn't leave when Rita came either. I feel safer here than out on the road with all those panicky people.  My office is going to be closed tomorrow and so is Michael's work. We both left early today, too. Doesn't mean I won't be working tomorrow, though. It's budget season and there is a lot of work to be done so any spare time I have tomorrow I'm going to try to get some work done so it isn't too terribly piled up on me Monday when we go back to the office.

Our neighbors are all staying, too so if we're all out of electricity we'll be having post Hurricane Ike block parties to grill all the meat in our freezers so it doesn't ruin! Ha ha! We use any excuse for a block party on our street. I think this year we're going to have a Halloween block party, too instead of going around trick-or-treating. Nearly every house on our street has little kids so if they are all out trick-or-treating no one will be home anyway - so this way we'll all be able to dress up and have fun together. We'll still have plenty of candy for all the kiddos and lots of games and such, too!

Tonight Michael, Emma, and I are just chillin and watching movies. Michael did the yard and then we brought in all the outside stuff into the garage so there was as little as possible to fly around if we have a lot of wind - got the kitchen cleaned up after dinner and the house picked up and have been chillin in the living room ever since. Emma is so sleepy, but she is fighting sleep. You can see how heavy her eye lids are so she may not last too much longer! Think I might see if she is about ready to lay down. She'll be able to sleep late in the morning since we won't be leaving at 6:30 tomorrow!

21 Months

Today my baby girl is 21 months old! I can't believe that I almost have a 2 year old!! WOW!!

She is quite the little chatter box and is repeating more and more things she hears us say every day. I keep warning her daddy she is repeating some things she shouldn't!! She is also a very determined and strong willed little girl. She wants to do what she wants to do and is just bull-headed enough to keep on even when I tell her no. Sadly, I have to say she gets that from both parents I think! She loves to sing & dance to music - LOVES being outside & playing with bubbles. She also loves to ride. Her daddy takes her riding on the 4-wheeler all the time and she can't get enough!! She is big into Pooh right now.

We hit a spell where she did NOT want to go to bed at night. We have always been rather blessed b/c bedtime was easy. Just lay her down, give kisses, say goodnight, and that was it - well not lately! Lately it's been a nightmare - screaming until she loses her breath nightmare. I think we've finally passed it, though. The last couple of nights when I've laid her down she does cry, but only for a very short while - about 30 seconds after I leave her room she's quiet and I don't hear another peep until morning. Who knows what was going on - I am just glad we're coming out of it.

I took this picture Saturday in East Texas when we went up for the clay shoot - she was all decked out in her camo for the event!! Cookie in hand!

This isn't the original picture of course - I used a texture to make the original picture look like a TTV. This was my first attempt. I don't have a camera to use for a real TTV hence the use of the texture & photoshop CS2. I think it came out pretty well - they'll look better with more practice!

Week 4: Back to work today

It's always hard going back to work after so many days off. I've always said I couldn't be a stay at home mom, but...it still is nice knowing when you wake up in the morning you don't have to go into the office!

Monday morning I didn't wake up until 10:00!!! Granted, we did stay up late to watch a movie (this movie was wild), but I still cannot believe we slept that late. Even Emma - she only got up when her daddy went to get her out of bed!!

The weekend was very fun, though. Extremely hot, but still fun. I haven't uploaded my pics yet, except for this one, which I was using to play with texture overlays for fake ttv. I have a bunch, though so will be going through this this week & getting them posted.

Michael won a very nice shotgun at the shoot this weekend and got to go dove hunting yesterday to try it out - needless to say we're grilling dove tonight. It's in the fridge marinating now.

We ended up coming home Sunday - just didn't want to risk the drive being so terrible on Monday b/c of the storm. Who knows what people planned on doing. Also, we wanted to try to get together with some friends Monday, but unfortunately we weren't able to after all. It was nice to have a day home to just relax after being gone for four days, though. I had to come into the office Thursday morning for a meeting, but after that I left and we spent the morning getting things ready and hit the road that afternoon. So we spent Thursday, Friday, & Saturday nights in East Texas.

I had hoped Gustav would at least bring us more rain and cooler temperatures, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. Yesterday we got some pretty strong wind and a bit of rain, but it only lasted for a very short time.

Well, at least this is a short work week - always good to have after having a few days off - ease back into things!!
